Chapter Three

Mrs. Coates r e t u rned to the guests who were in the next ro o m . “What did you think of that, gentlemen? Were you

well entertained? The show… was it… rather unusual? Was it worth it?”

The assembled company chorused their thanks for having been provided with such a sensational diversion.

“Even so, this chap Barrington, he does alright for himself!” cried Reverend Nicolas.

“Then gentlemen,” said the horrible woman, “if the desire so moves you… if you want a modest supplement… you can… I could arrange to place at your disposition… this young maiden. Oh, she has only just recently lost her virginity… I could arrange, for a few guineas… you could get in a lick or two yourselves…”

Reverend Nicolas. “I shall try not to take advantage of your…

should not unduly be taken advantage of, you old lecher,” cried Lord

Selwin as he cuffed the minister on the shoulder. “We know all about

you. Just make sure to go at it gently. Don’t do like the last time, with

that unfortunate, little widowed countess who you fucked so arduously that you left her half dead. And then that one… she wasn’t any

virgin. Oh no!”

Laughing, the three men strolled out of the room and went into the

salon, where Mary lay on the floor, exhausted, distressed, and in tears. Before entering, Lord Selwin ordered three bottles of champagne,

which Mildred brought in shortly. Hearing a noise, Mary painfully

raised herself on one elbow. She was beaten and haggard and her hair

was all mussed. She cried out aloud when she saw the three lechers

enter. Grabbing the bathrobe from the floor near the bureau, she

made an instinctive gesture of covering her body. She sat upright

without daring to budge.

“Good evening, Mary… good evening… good evening,” said the three men once they had entered the room. Lord Selwin sat down in front of the bureau, Lord Justice Strongcock placed himself in the

armchair, and Reverend Nicolas remained standing in front of her. “Oh, good Reverend,” cried the girl with tears in her eyes. “You

have come to save me from the clutches of that horrible creature who

led me into this terrible trap, have you not?” She gazed at him desperately for a reassuring response.
